Megan -N- Carl / Travis Heights Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Megan and Carl are like a couple of honeymooners already, crazy for each other and just can't keep their hands off  ;) I LOVE it!  They will be host and hostess at the sweetest intimate wedding just two days after Christmas at Green Pastures. We photographed their engagement session in their little neighborhood in Travis Heights. Megan made sure they were coordinated in dress and it looks good. They have a brand new baby kitten that was all the rage when I arrived, so we nabbed a few frames even though it was not necessarily on the wish list of papa bear. Thank you guys, it was lovely working with you so far. See you soon!

Cinco De Mayo inspirations / Camille Styles / Austin Party Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

This is just a teensy bit late, but I love all of the color and decor so much I just have to share it anyway. Cinco De Mayo inspiration - file it away for next year ;) Camille Styles together with her team Chanel and Jen pulled together this mid-afternoon happy hour soiree to celebrate May 5. Sangria, shredded chicken and guacamole tostadas, and delicious watermelon and feta bites, staples really, were all served along side a succulent center piece and lacy table topper. The afternoon progressed to a custom photobooth with hand made Spanish flags. It's a great day to spend with friends!

K+K / Vista West Ranch Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

K+K

Katie and Kieran met in New York City while working as copywriters for an ad agency. Katie is from Houston while Kieran is from New York. To celebrate the great distance they crossed to come together, and in honor of all the worldly places their guests traveled from, they created a lavish destination affair.

Their centerpieces and table numbers were custom designed maps of locales that the couple hold dear to them including Manhattan, Mexico and Austin. Carrying the theme of travel throughout the wedding, K+K added to their guests' escort cards the couples favorite travel destinations. They also included nods to their host city of Austin with charming cowboy boots, BBQ from Gourmet Gals and Guys, and tabasco sauce party favors. Their awesome wedding color combo of turquoise and pink was in every detail including bridesmaid's dresses, flowers from Petal Pushers and a 4 tiered pink gradient wedding cake by Simon Lee Bakery. The whole affair was pulled together perfectly by Aimee Villa of Lizze Belle Event Planning

Kieran mentioned during their engagement session that Katie requests or plays "Boot Scoot Boogie" everywhere they go in New York. hmmm, sounds familiar. With the Matt Wilson Band at the helm there was not a still moment on their dance floor. It was an amazing Sunday evening with the most perfect sunset. A day any couple would proudly relive again and again.

bride and groom on a tractor I met Christy and Greg in very unlikely place, they had never seen my work before but fell in love and trusted me on the spot. They went to my website, met a week later and the deal was done. We had a blast! I'm glad we found each other.

I am madly in love with Hacienda del Lago, which you may already know I cannot stop singing their praises, the location is completely out of control. I shot a bridal portrait out there in September 2009 and feel in love with one particular image, the bride in her long flowey dress walking on the path toward the house at exactly the right time of light. It reminded me of Palm Springs circa 1960. So I started researching the era, decor, fashion, and style. I met with Margaret Bedikian of 3 Apples Events and we together poured over more images from the era, and with that, our concept and visuals really came together and started to take shape. We got together with Kari Shelton of Wow Factor Design Co., brilliant. Armed with our concept and colors Margaret found Wicked Cakes who made our awesome inspired cake and Paige's Bake House who made those completely adorable and  absolutely delicious Petit Fours. The models were a no brainer, a couple we worked with for their wedding in February, who have become a part of our family, Brandi and Lee Barnwell. None of this could be possible with out fantastic styling from Shannon Yarbrough without whom we would have no dresses (Linda AsafBlush BridalBella Saison) headpieces and accessories (Tracy TenpennyMillistar) or men's where. Rentals from Premier Party Central who supplied us with all of the white for our backdrop. Austin Catering created those bite sized pieces of pure art on a plate and lastly Brizy Tait of Keep Austin Gorgeous knocked it off the charts with her beautiful hair and make-up.

Last October I got to get a great group of talented and completely lovable vendors together, a few people I don't mind spending 5 am with. We collaborated seamlessly. Austin Wedding Photography

Best of the Knot 2011 - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

We were honored for the second year in a row, to be selected as "Best of the Knot 2011." Austin Wedding Photographer

We would like to thank all of the amazing couples we had the honor of photographing last year, as well as all of the top-notch vendors we had the pleasure of working with.   Thank You.

My all time favorite thing to get in the mail is a thank you note from one of our couples. When I was a bride I was so blown away by the service I was provided by all of the vendors we chose that I just had to write them all thank you notes. I remember composing them in my head while on my honeymoon. So when we get one, we know it takes something extra special to get someone to write a note about how happy they were. We received a few this year and I thought I would share with you someone of the thoughts that have come from our other clients.

"Dear Melanie and Steve,

Andrew and I just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful job you did with our wedding photos. We LOVED working with you (so easy!) and are thrilled with the final product! :) Definitely will be recommending you to friends...we are so grateful for you and the talent you have - what an eye! :)

MANY thanks, Katrina & Andrew Sullivan"  5.7.10

"Dear Mel,

Thank you so much for all of the amazing photos! I am so lucky to have such great pics to remember my day! We really appreciate all of you hard work!

Best, Aileen & Jeremy"  7.31.10

"Mel & Steve -

What can I say - you guys are rock stars. My guests loved you - your fun attitude just added to a fun, funky night. We hope you enjoyed yourselves half as much as we did. We can't get over how amazing the photos are. Everyone's sitting around at home going through ALL 500 of them! So happy we found you.

Love, Mr & Mrs. Mejia"  10.30.10

Planning a wedding of a family portrait session in the future? Call me, let's chat.

2.11.10 Inspiration by Melanie Grizzel

Yesterday I was asked by a couple who I met with, where I found my inspiration. It was such an excellent question and I wanted to share my answer with everyone.
I find my inspiration in everything, color, texture, expressions, everywhere. More literally, I find inspiration in location, fashion, grooming and personality. People inspire me, sometimes the people I get to work with are afraid of the camera and it's fun to see them come out of their shell, and that's inspiring. And sometimes I get to work with "old pros" in front of the camera and it's a whole different kind of inspiration. I also keep a collection of pictures and illustrations that inspire me daily. I have a bulletin board on the wall that I tack all of this imagery into. I keep collections of graphic art and photography books. I find inspiration in everything, I love Books, Movies, Magazines.  I subscribe to PDN, Dwell, Cooking Light, Entertainment Weekly, and Time. I have a handy camera around incase a movie or a show has a nicely blocked scene. I take a shot of it and save it for my wall. In this batch of images you'll see some images from Cobis images, you'll see a clip from Mad Men, and scene from The Reader. Some several classic French and American advertisements.
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Especially from you.
Thanks for asking.
enjoy.
