Allison + Curtis / South Austin Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

I thought it seemed only appropriate since we will be photographing Allison and Curtis' wedding on Sunday that I should post their engagement photographs today. These guys were both power players in DC government. How cool! Note: Allison's gorgeous bridals will go up next Tuesday. I can hardly wait to show them off!  Right after the wedding they are headed to the Windy City for Northwestern and graduate school.

They came in to Austin for a quick weekend last fall. We concentrated on South Austin locations and Zilker Park. It was a perfect fall (really winter, but fall feeling) day.  Sunday night Vintage Villas will be bursting at the seems with good times in honor of these two folks. Congratulations to them. I'm so thrilled to be a part of your wedding day.

Lauren -N- Kevin / Chapel Dulcinea and Stonehouse Villa Wedding / Driftwood Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Lauren and Kevin married at Chapel Dulcinea under the most perfect conditions ever, a little windy with beautiful blue skies. Their reception was held at Stonehouse Villa in beautiful Driftwood, Tx. They had some of the most amazing small touches that came together beautifully with Heather from Vintage&Lace at the helm. Lauren designed her bridesmaids dresses and had them custom made. Stems devised and orchestrated a gorgeous display of flowers in pale colors with touches of tea party silver and crystal and also elements of the outside with succulents and tree stumps. Guests noshed on tea sandwiches and scones from The Steeping Room and shared pints of mead and stout from the home brewing operations of both Lauren's and Kevin's Dads, and Michelle's Patisserie delivered my most favorite cake to date, built to Lauren's exact specifications - perfection.
From Lauren:
My Matron of Honor, Valery Hitt designed and sewed my wedding dress, train, sash embellishment, and hair adornments. She put a lot of time and love into everything that she did for my wedding and I really think that it all turned out beautifully. She is a dear dear person and immensely talented.
The bridesmaids dresses were designed by me (after some unfruitful searching for off-the-rack styles). They were patterned and sewn by Austin Bridal and Formal. They turned out beautifully and have already accomplished their goal of being worn beyond the wedding!
Terra Vista Strings met every request that I sent to them. So I got Final Fantasy VII music for my bridal processional and Concerning Hobbits for the wedding recessional. And then they played my Final Fantasy music again!!! It was awesome!
The song that Kevin and I danced to at the wedding was from a show called Pushing Daisies that we watched together when we first started dating. It is super cute and I think it will always remind us of when we first fell in love with each other.
My Maid of Honor Sarah Nelson drove all the way up from Houston almost every weekend for a few months to teach us a dance for it. We think that we ended up doing a passable job of it on the day of the wedding.
The song that I danced to with my father was called Arirang which is a very very very old Korean folk song. It was one of the few Korean songs that my dad remembered my mom singing when they were younger.
I purchased my husband's ring from a jeweler named Johan Rust on Etsy. The center band of the ring is a seamless meteorite. Kevin is studying Astro-Engineering at UT and has always loved Outer Space so I had an engraving put on the inside of the ring that reads: Sic Itur Ad Astra 3113 It means "Thus you shall go to the stars." And the "3113" is the date of our wedding. I'm giving him a leg-up for anniversaries :)
The necklace that my husband gave to me on the day of the wedding has special significance to me. I was enamored with it at the jewelry shop and wanted very much to wear it on the day of my wedding. Kevin went behind my back and purchased it shortly afterwards. He gave it to my bridesmaid Elizabeth Boyd for safekeeping. And then he got everybody to lie to me for over half a year (including the wonderful shop owners at Franzetti's) about the disappearance of the necklace and prospective availability of another one.So I am very glad that everyone lied to me :p as it increased my delight on the day of my wedding. The large gem in the center of the star is a sapphire which was my only something blue on the day of the wedding. It will forever be a symbol of my husband's love and of the wondrous love and goodness of the people around me who aided him in giving me such a beautiful surprise.
My wedding ring was designed and made by McCoy Jewelcraft. Kevin's mother was a friend and client of theirs and they remembered her when Kevin and I came to have my ring made. They were very kind and helpful to us. They suggested that we bring in gold from broken or unused jewelry to help with the price of the ring. So my ring has gold from Kevin's class ring, my mom's old jewelry, gold and diamonds from my dad's second wedding ring (he and my  mom remarried each other), and gold most generously given from my lovely friend Elizabeth. The ring guard was the ring guard from my mom's first wedding ring. It was fixed and resized by McCoy's.  When we ordered my ring and turned in the gold for it, I told McCoy's that I trusted them to make a beautiful ring and left happily with no idea of what it was going to look like. When Kevin proposed to me that Christmas, he presented me with a ring beyond my imagination. It is beautiful and unlike any other.
The dollhouse was a project that Kevin and I started for the wedding. I thought that a dollhouse would be appropriate since we were asking for house money to put in savings in lieu of other gifts. We bought a $30 kit from Hobby Lobby and thought that it would be easy. I helped to paint the house and then Kevin did pretty much everything else and the project took on a life of its own. His original degree is in theater set design so I suppose it makes sense. He built a plot of land for it to sit on and put together all of the small details that made it charming. It was project that I thought would not last beyond a couple of weeks and it turned into a several month long adventure in arts and crafts.
It was a labor of love.

Brooke, Casey, and Ari / Engagement - Family Session / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Brooke, Casey and baby Ari makes three.

They met in college and have dated ever since. Ari came along a few years later, then Brooke proposed to Casey. She did it from a boat, using flash cards pointed at the dock near Hula Hut where Casey was hanging out with friends and family. He said yes! The couple plan to tie the knot at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden on the ever fitting, April Fools Day. I'm so thrilled for your three, I'm so excited to see your dream wedding come together!

Christine -N- Don / Stonehouse Villa Wedding / Driftwood Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Christine -N- Don

Absolutely sublime wedding at the Stonehouse Villa. The weather was a little unseasonably chilly, but it didn't stop this crew from dancing all night long. Stonehouse Villa is a fairly newish venue in Driftwood, it offers beautiful sweeping views of the Texas Hill Country landscape. The interior, formerly a furniture design studio, is an intimate and sophisticated canvas.  The couple used the space perfectly with a minimal touch of flowers and table runners, totally my style ;) The flowers and some vegetables from Central Market were variations of green and white. A single center piece in the middle of a grey tweed table runner from Premier Party Central was intoxicatingly beautiful! Pink Avocado provided a delightful meal complete with butternut squash lasagna (truth be told it was my first experience with it, YUM! I found a recipe and made it myself a few days later). It was the perfect menu for a surprisingly chilly evening.

Christine and Don met in a church group and quickly found they were perfect for each other. Don has quirky sense humor and Christine with her warm heart is the perfect yang to his ying. Enamored I tell you. Congratulations you guys I am excited to follow your life together.

Jette -N- Del / An Engagement Party at Lenoir / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Recently Engaged - Jette' -N- Del. They met and fell in love while sampling Austin culinary offerings. They dined at Lenoir the night they became engaged. It was only fitting they would return to the fated restaurant for their big announcement. Their friends are like minded foodies as well, so the couple decided to throw a dinner party to make the announcement, but first to follow their food theme, they made a hand crafted chocolate invitation that was hand delivered to their guests. Guests arrived and enjoyed cocktails in the courtyard, while Courtney and Paul Sanchez played live. Then they were invited inside where they enjoyed a 4 course wine tasting menu. The room was a flutter with conversation and laughter, except when the food arrive for each course, there was a collective quiet in the room while guests enjoyed each course. Jette's and Dell quietly and quite intimately shared their plates with one another. So CUTE! The perfect night cap, Erin Ivey playing "Chocolate" in French and in English. The night was simply... delicious. The smile and her nutty sense of humor, make us wish she was here everyday ;) Blake, her lucky beau, and she are planning their wedding at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall at the end of December. I couldn't be more excited, I imagine there will be many Coke related products EVERYWHERE.

Julia -N- Cristihan / Nature's Point Wedding / Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Houston-dwellers Julia and Christian chose to celebrate their wedding in Austin on Lake Travis so they could provide their guests with a destination feel.  Their wedding day was truly made special by their guests that traveled from near and far to share in the occasion.

The wedding theme was inspired by the Bride and Groom’s heritage, she being English and he being Colombian. The ceremony took place at Nature’s Point’s beautiful outdoor arbor and English garden, which was complimented by white roses and Royal purple orchids provided by Bouquets of Austin.  When it came time for the bride to walk down the aisle, good fortune was showered on the couple (literally!!) when a rain storm moved through the area. Lindsay Blackwell from In Her Shoes Coordination moved the the couple's guests swiftly and efficiently back inside, the ceremony was quickly reset and the bride had the pleasure of walking down the aisle a second time. The ceremony was followed by a cocktail hour where English fish & chips and Colombian empanadas (the groom’s own recipe!) were the featured hors d’oeuvres from Austin Catering.  Day turned into evening when the vibrant and colorful reception began.  The happy couple, along with all their family and friends, danced the night away to an array of Salsa and Colombian music by Houston's DJ Johnny Black.
The wedding was described by many as magical and unforgettable, and the couple say they could not agree more.

Heras Family / Hutto Family Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

The Heras Family. We met about 3 years or ago, after Ben was born, when Linsey and Marcos were planning their wedding. Months later we went out and shot their engagement session (see it here) when things were basically carefree. Then their wedding, which was wonderful (have a look here) all of Linsey's family are from MN and we spent the entire night trying to undersand the Nordic accents. Dontcha know? Fast forward about a year and little screaming red-head Charlie was born. We photographed Charlie's first "official" photographs (Have a look at that session here.) Now that Charlie is nearly a year it was time to capture the whole family of 4. Now things are a little more chaotic ;) I'm just thrilled that the universe put us together, I'm better person for knowing them.

Enjoy.

Camille Styles / Halloween Party Ideas! / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

I don't know if you've ever seen "The Birds" by Alred Hitchcock... I saw it at the Paramount Theatre in late summer. I'm not afraid of birds and the movie didn't scare me, but coming out of the theatre in the late summer with all of the grackles flocking in the trees and in the area overhead... well let's just say I noticed them a little more that night ;)

Halloween Inspiration by Camille Styles.

This "The Birds" inspired party shoot was eerie and sexy with it's brooding black and white theme and tiny pops of red. It also suggests a fall/wintery feel - my favorite. Tiny birds littered the scene to reinforce the concept and make it a little scarier. The dining table from LOOT vintage rental was perfect with it's ornate and classic feel. I assure you this is not patinated, that baby is original. The table is beautifully bookended by big poofy black and white striped chairs I would gladly store for LOOT should they ever run out of room in their warehouse. The white walls and stained glass of Mercury Hall were characters all their own in this story.

The bar cart complete with vodka and tomato juice for the luxurious bloody marys. Each place setting came complete with a menu with a tiny accent feather.

All of the snacks including salted caramel apples and black bird suger cookies we expertly created by Sara from Sara Belle's Bakery. Sara explained that birds were easy by comparison, they looked pretty hard to me, until I went to her site!!! WOWzers, I can hardly wait until B's next birthday, I am going to ask Sara to rock out some Star Wars characters.

A couple branches suspended from the ceiling served as a perches for the wandering bird posse. It was a wonderful addition, and gave great dimension to the already spooky table.

The crew doubled as cast and wore their best Halloween holiday fair. Even B asked me when I was editing if she, on the right, was Cruella de Vil.

Byrd Collective's Ashley Bailey created these divine autumnal arrangements in creamy toupe and deep red, low so the hanging birds would have a little room to take flight.

Sara's beautiful and delicious cookies. B loved them, plus when he munched on them, his whole face turned black, it was so cute.

Jen came up with this outstanding idea for a photobooth, the sheer backdrop and bird cut outs shining through. So clever and what an awesome effect.

And just a couple behind the scenes so you can see just what goes into such a wonderous production.

Nyssa -N- Brett / Palm Door Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Nyssa -N- Brett's wedding at Palm Door was beautiful, theatrical and full of life and promise. Nyssa, together with her family and friends, created the wonderful beaded flower bouquets. They were perfect, even when they snagged on her dress in the middle of ceremony (I left those shots out.) It's like I tell every couple, it's the little things, the slip-ups and folly that make a wedding charming and memorable. It was no different here, Nyssa and her sister giggled their way through unsnagging the ruthless flowers. The couple imagined trees for their theme, and with the help of her sister and brother-in-law they were able to accomplish the look with theatrical flair, blue gobos and tree limb cut outs. Pink Avocado put together a beatiful vegetarian spread for the couple and their guests. The flower girls looked like little fairy princesses in their custom brown bodices and a HUGE bell of tulle in turquoise and brown, and they both lasted the entire night, and in their outfits! Nyssa wore jewels and carried a handkerchief of her grandmother, who incidentally wasn't well enough to make the trek so they skyped the entire wedding back to her grandparents at home. Nyssa's Dad in his commanding stature came into the tiny bridal suite and looked across room to Nyssa's mom and said "Can you believe THIS is happening right now?" Then he launched into the story about how he and Nyssa's Mom met and how amazing it was that they were here, at this moment, celebrating their daughter's wedding. These are the moments I love, this is why I do this. Nyssa, in turn, surprised her dad by making "Yellow Submarine" their Father/Daughter dance. Her dad is clearly a huge Beatles fan. The love in this family and in this wedding was infectious. It was a great event and super fun party, I am so happy for you both.

Now, let's have dinner ;)

Jessica-N-Alex / Vista on Seward Hill Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Jessica -N- Alex

The Vista on Seward Hill was an outstanding location for their colorful wedding ceremony and reception. The boys started out at Alex's boyhood home where they played in the pool and otherwise goofed around until it was time to learn how to tie a double windsor ;)  The girls holed up at Embassy Suites getting and their hair done and make-up applied by the talented Michelle Cox (and otherwise prepping as ladies will). The wedding party and guests converged on The Vista on Seward Hill for the dreamy sunset ceremony and danced all night. With a 5 am flight to Thailand looming, Jessica and Alex sped off to their future but not before they checked for their passports in their pre-packed bags. It was wonderful working with Three Apples Events, Royal Fig, and the insanely gifted Margot Blair for flowers. Congratulations to you both.

Kelly -N- Stephen / Reimers Ranch Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Kelly, a student at UT, has been a rock climber/outdoors-lover since she was little when she shared these experiences with her father. Stephen was also student at UT, and while he was an outdoors-lover he had never rock-climbed in his life until the day he tried the UT climbing wall on a lark. His instructor?  Kelly. Stephen made his move, and while things may have started off a little rocky at first (haha-I kid), he soon began to grow on her. Now, they scale walls together and will make it official this fall.  It was perfect that they would choose Reimers Ranch for their engagement session, as it is the only natural climbing area in Austin. The acreage was once owned by Milton Reimer and was a favorite of many a climber. When he passed away, he left the land to the city under the condition that it remain a place for climbers to reach new heights. Since taking over the grounds, the city has worked to shape the area into a little bit more of an accessible park. It's among Kelly and Stephen's most favorite sanctuaries. Now, I'm not gonna lie folks... I was more than a little nervous a few times. I'm not much of outdoorsy type, I like city life and sidewalks. This was a stretch (literally) for me but I loved every minute of it.  And I thank these two so much for getting me out of my confort zone and into the wilderness. Another giant leap for She-N-He!

Nicole -N- Sam / Vista West Ranch Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

The super lovely Nicole and Sam married at Vista West Ranch on April 15 - tax day.

From Nicole: "We met at a funeral in California. Well, we had seen each other before here and there, but we had our first real conversation at a funeral. We started dating right away, and I couldn't get enough of him! A month later I broke the news that I was moving to Boston to attend grad school. Surprisingly, he wanted to come along! It was so exciting! He quit his job, packed his bags and hopped in my car. We hardly knew each other when we were driving cross country! It was the wildest thing ever - moving far away with a stranger. We both had an adventurous, devil-may-care attitude about dating. That was eight years ago, and now we're mister and missus."

From Nicole: "My dress... I tried on dresses for six long months. I knew it would be tough because I wanted to add some custom touches to whatever dress I bought to make it more "me" - more dramatic! I finally found it, it's an Enzoani, on Black Friday at Blush Bridal. The dress fit me pretty well, and more importantly, it  lent itself well to the custom sleeves I was dreaming up in my head. I bought it right on the spot, and met with my seamstress,  Deborah Birch, to tell her all about the sleeves I envisioned. I sketched for her some drapey, double-drop sleeves, and she brought it to life! Plus, she made an extra set of sleeves - fabulous cuffs - that I could change into for our dance. Partying on the dance floor was definitely a must, and my second pair of sleeves allowed me to swing my arms like a wild woman all night. Some brides have a dress change for the reception, but I had a sleeve change! That was definitely my favorite part of the dress."

Natalie -N- Ryan / Private New Braunfuls Waterfront Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Natalie and Ryan have been together since high school, they have been living a quiet, practically married life, ever since, with their family including their dog in Austin, Tx. They finally decided it "was time," they were ready for that next step. They're ready to start a family and they just wanted to share their obvious commitment with family and friends as they launch into the next phase.

McAdoo's Seafood Company in New Braunfuls, TX is the restaurant that did the catering, everything from fresh oysters to filet their food bases were covered, in fact I over heard a guest saying to another guest "can they host a party or what."    2 Tarts, a bakery in New Braunfuls, did all of the sweet treats on the dessert table including the cake, except the brownies, that was Fork & Spoon.  Comal Rental Company provided all the rentals, tables, chairs, linens etc.  Blumen Meisters Flower market did all of the body and aisle marker flowers.  The rest of the flowers and centerpieces for the table were done by  Becky Wiggins, the brides step-mom and her friends and neighbors.  Also, the burlap table topper for the dinner tables were sown and stenciled by Becky and her Mom, Janelle.  Janelle also made the table cloth for the cake table and used lace from her parents own 50th wedding anniversary. Pretty neat!  The china and silverware came from Aztec Rental out of San Antonio.  The band was the Argyles out of Austin.  The String Quartet was Quartetto Lirico out of Austin.  Carl's Electric out of New Braunfels hung all the lights and did the other electrical work.  Joe Ball, a contractor the couple works with in their real estate business,  made the stand for the canoe and the structure for the bar.  Texas River Tubes provided the transportation.

Thuy -N- Brannon / East Austin Engagement Photography / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Thuy -N- Brannon Met through mutual friends and their romance has been a whirlwind. They are tying the knot on their short courtship in just 2 weeks. You just know when you know!

I love these guys! They were super easy-going and could bend and mold when we suddenly were kicked out of the location I chose for them... oops. It was a good one though, worth the first 30 minutes without notice. So they were able to take it in and move quickly and all was not lost.

Thanks guys for having me along for the ride!

Marlene -N- Eric / Mercury Hall Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Marlene -N- Eric -- Mercury Hall -- 3.4.12

She is a teacher and he is a co-founder of the internet start-up Forecast. They are ridiculously loved by their friends and family and silly adored by each other. Just look at them. They were pure pleasure to work with. Thank you both for having me.

Mercury Hall was a beautiful backdrop for their brunch nuptials on what was a perfect March morning to tie the knot. Marlene and her bridesmaids spent the morning at Hotel San Jose  feeling "easy breezy" and getting their hair and make-up done by Kathryn Lyons and Houston Puryear respectively. A quick but completely terrifying ride from Hotel San Jose to Mercury Hall courtesy of the bride's sister, just in time for a quick first look with her soon-to-be-husband Eric. Friend and Officiant, Jason Callahan delivered a beautiful service to unite the beloved couple. A reading from The Velveteen Rabbit  rounded out the service. They chose Kerbey Lane to cater their delicious brunch. Yum. POLLEN provided the beautiful succulent, billy ball, and peony brimming bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. The rest of the floral decor was subtle and elegant from Austin Flower Company. With a nod to Eric's childhood home in PA, the delicious (and gorgeous) pies and cakes were provided by Quacks and Sao Paolos respectively. Friend and DJ R.J. Johnson played an awesome tailored mix of tunes complete with Italian pop hits for Marlene's "Italian Crew." This entire divine event was pulled together by yet another friend and coordinator, Linda Huynh.

Congratulations you guys. Thanks for having me.
