Kathleen -N- Nick - New York City Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Couple portrait Brooklyn New YorkKathleen and Nick met while work in a Mexican restaurant together in Austin, Tx. She continued with school when he left to go to West Point, then joined him in New York state. She now resides in Brooklyn, NY, while h continues his studies at West Point. They wanted to commemorate their stay in New York by photographing their engagement session in Brooklyn, NY. Kathleen did an amazing job drawing a map to all of the locations she liked but also left some room for chance. We only had the one day and it rained but it made for great photographs. We found a great coffee shop in Vinegar Hill that didn't want to let us shoot but we charmed them into a teeny session before their Sunday morning brunch. It was a welcome change of pace and really got my juices flowing!

We were able to stay in New York for a few days for a visit with all of our friend, just long enough to make us miss it like crazy, though the baby carriage was new. Not fun... I'll just say it. So I don't think we'll be moving back anytime soon... I realized I even missed the subway, 4 years ago, I never thought I'd say it.

My B - personal - Austin Children Photography by Melanie Grizzel

at home childrens photographer I had a beautiful baby boy 2+ years ago. I had all of these ideas about what kids would mean to me.

baby portrait austin

My mom, while she had to work extra hard to keep us in food and clothes, was an ideal example of what parenting was/is. She loves wholly. It's hard to describe that perfect kind of love.  I remember bits about my childhood and life with her and just remember always feeling like I was wrapped in a warm embrace. I thought for sure that would be the type of parent I would be, think only of my children and making all of my decisions based on their welfare, exclusively. I'm not like my mom, I have a million interests and a career I LOVE. I spend a fair amount of time away from my son, and for a while I thought he didn't care for me too much.  I recently took him to meet his new baby cousin Rhett when he was born and I had my son on my own for 3 days. No Daddy.  No Nanny.  I was scared. How would I handle every moment on my own?

It's amazing to me that there are people out there that love children so much they want to work with them all day.  Our Nanny and my mom would easily take a child on their own and play all day and do all the things a child would like the entire day. I like doing laundry and dishes (not really, but I DO like when they're done.) How can I do all of the things in life and still give my child all of the things he needs like college, cottage cheese and playtime? He went through a particularly bad period where he would whine constantly.  As a parent I thought you can tell what's wrong with your kid, but that was on average. Everyday he would whine and I wouldn't know what the problem was but that I knew he couldn't express himself and this was the base of his frustration. WOW this was a rough patch.  Sometimes I can say I wasn't sure if I even liked him, every day was a struggle and I would think why did we have kids again?

Then today I woke up and he was laying on his belly three feet from the cat and asking her "What's your name?" I said "Her name is Mamma, she doesn't talk like you." He ignored this altogether and proceeded with, "Kitty, what's your name?" With that my heart swelled to an unprecedented size and burst into a million baby hearts. On our one-on-one trip to see his baby cousin that immediately trailed a family trip to New York, we bonded. We really connected, his health is good and he is learning everyday more words and putting phrases together. We started with, during his terribly rough patch, "May I have _____, please" it really helped to curb the whining, and he is very capable now. He uses the phrase for everything "May I have cottage cheese, please?" for obvious reasons. And "May I have playground please?" when he wants to go play. And when I wasn't pushing his swing fast enough "May I have higher please?"

Now I know if he is crabby which is usually once every couple of weeks, it's probably because he is tired or bored. We're told all the time what an easy child he is, which is always followed with, "wait till the next one!" usually with a little snicker... Oh yeah?! maybe we just make good kids.

sleeping baby photography

his beloved Bunny Bear, never leaves home without him. Neither do we ;)

Raising a child is a balancing act, with each success there is a usually a new challenge.  In our case, he can communicate but that means he can now express a preference to sleep in our bed instead of his own. Just when you think you've got this child rearing thing tapped, a new situation presents itself. You discuss with your spouse what the next move should be and implement. Then hopefully that problem is solved and you can ride a 2 to 3 day parenting success wave before there is a new issue you get to work on. When my son was due I was scared out of my mind. Not only, "Will I be a good parent?" but also "How do I keep an infant breathing?" these were my concerns. I had a good friend tell me, "God wouldn't present you with a problem you can't solve." Luckily all of those problems don't come at once. It is years worth of weekly challenges, but with each issue comes real hugs.  "I you too," which is Bishop speak for I love you,  and this....

Sometimes I think my heart may burst with happiness.

[vimeo id="21471960"] Ruth-N-Wes stopped by the She-N-He office to share their experience working with us and to spread the love.  Many thanks to JR Digital Video for recording and putting together this video for us! And Thank you Ruth and Wes for selflessly coming by and sharing your experience with our cameras.

We photographed Ruth and Wes' very intimate wedding last year February. It was small but bursting at the seems with love. They took their vows after nearly ten years together at Umlauf Scuplture Garden and held their reception at the ever-delicious Vespaio on South Congress.

They were a delight to work with and we were honored to be a part of their wonderful day.

Live Studio Photobooth - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Vintage Villas Wedding PhotoboothPhoto booths are popular, fun and a great tool when it comes to photographing all of your guests in a relaxed environment. You're guests get to choose when they're ready to be photographed and ham it up as much as they want! You can  add props or furniture to equation the bounds are limitless. Vintage Villas Wedding Photo booth

Vintage Villas Wedding Photo booth

Vintage Villas Wedding Photography booth

In the case of Amanda and Corey's photobooth at Vintage Villas, they added yellow and grey props to bring home the color and theme of their wedding. They added yellow pictures frames, mustaches, and umbrellas. They also chose a white paper background so that anything more elaborate would not compete with their design aesthetic.

Duchman Family Winery Photography booth

Duchman Family Winery (formerly Mandola Estates Winery) with Carly and Chad's photobooth in July 2010.

They did not choose a backdrop so we provided a piece of material that had to be steamed forever before the booth opened during reception, and a great deal of retouching got rid of the rest of those wrinkles, that backdrop was promptly burned ;)

A booth also help gets photographs of people who might not make it to the dance floor or any other action in the night, it's a great way to not miss people at your wedding.

We will be photographing a booth coming in a couple weeks at Barr Mansion. The couple would like to have photographs of every single guest and family. So they are handing out business card sized prompts for their guests to find "the photobooth" Which will be marked but it's not a traditional booth. Our photographer for that portrait session is super excited about the prospect. I'll admit, I'm a little jealous...

Austin Event PhotographyThis booth was constructed for Rackspace Austin for there company party during the tech week of SXSW. Their party was held at Kung Fu Saloon in Austin. You can see in the images that there are Space Invader characters bricked into the wall where we planned to stage the booth, using the space as out backdrop. So we chose to have props. I am not much of a builder so I tasked the super talented Jennifer Ng to do the props for the booth. She knocked it out of the park with all of her props with gaming references.

This booth was also for Leap , this time at Speakeasy downtown Austin. This booth was wonderful because the best place for us was a dark corner with a circle booth and a bank of windows with a street lights shining through. I used an extra long exposure to pick up the architecture of those lights. The guests were decked out in the flapper best and the night was a raging success. What a great time we all had!

Shweta -N- Vishal - Austin Engagement Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Engagement PhotographyShweta and Vishal They were introduced by their families. Their union is a modern arranged marriage. Not really betrothed but were introduced with the hope that they would fall in love and one day wed. Schweta told her mother that she would never marry Vishal, because he had the same name as her brother and how could she? She met Vishal and they laughed and had such a wonderful time together that she decided, it might not be such a bad thing. Vishal recently moved to Austin from Houston and Schweta is finishing up a job and planning a traditional three day Indian Wedding in San Francisco for June. Then they will be reunited in Austin. La Patisserie - Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

La_Patisserie_Austin_Wedding_PhotographySunday morning I was out photographing Lauren and Matt. We got started at UT campus at dawn on the Sunday the end of SXSW, it was quiet and beautiful. Then we popped by the "Greetings from Austin" postcard wall.  We finished up our session and we were lured by the frantic waiving hands and battle cry "Happy National Macaron Day!" La Patisserie was celebrating in style with 5 new flavors, I can't remember them all but the toasted almond was our all time favorite. I was getting Macarons confused with Macaroons.

French Macarons are a delightful little cookie sandwich cookie made from egg whites, almond powder and food coloring, and they're filled with buttercream or jam. They're tasty and they have spectacular texture.

They can be made into any color to match any wedding color combo. You can use them as favors or they can stack them into a pyramid to make a cake like structure.

Be the first of your friends to show off this new trendy, tasty confection at your wedding.

Enjoy.

Christy -N- Greg Engaged! - Austin Engagement Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Engagement Photographer

Christy and Greg.

We met while I was shooting a photo booth during a Leap benefit at Seaholm Power Plant. There were a line of attendees and Greg wanted to negotiate his wedding on the spot. But I told him he would just HAVE to come in and chat with me outside of that situation and my candor if what drew them to me. I met Christy again the same week at a wedding event I sent them to, and after that we were golden. So here we are folks, their wedding is tomorrow, on a piece of property her landlord owns, in South Austin. I can hardly wait to see how it's all going to come out, and hopefully a special quick trip for Greg to the fire station after their event. We'll see.

I spoke with Greg yesterday about plans and tomorrow and then about their engagement pictures and it was clear I won over a skeptic. He says the pictures I thought I would like were great but the pictures I wasn't so sure about or that made me feel stupid while we were shooting it look better. Trust is the #2 reason to do an engagement session. If you have the budget and you're waffling. Do it. It's remarkable how much piece of mind it can bring when you already have worked with your photographer.

Amanda -N- Corey / Just Married! - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Wedding PhotographerAhhh... Amanda and Corey, I sure am going to miss these guys! We have been working on their wedding for well over a year. They didn't have it in their budget at the time to schedule an engagement session. So at the end of the wedding we were able to instead do an after session with them at Lustre Pearl. I know it's a bit over used, but for good reason, what a gold mine. That place is amazing, so beautiful. It was so exciting to shoot there, every corner offers a new perspective. And these two rocked it out. If you'd like to revisit Amanda and Corey's wedding photos click <here.> If you'd like to see Amanda and Corey invitation suite or save the date cards click each respectively. Steve (He) also sent A+C a variety of concepts for their cards and you've already sent the final, so here are the other concepts. Lots of links, if you made it through enjoy the rest of these amazing images. We were all VERY happy.

Group Shots - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Wedding PhotographerI think you'd be surprised if you knew how many people come to my office and tell me, "I don't want group shot. My mom wants group shots but, it's not important to me." For that reason I don't show them a lot, when I make a sample book I often leave them out because there are more desirable shots. When I was married I handed our photographer a list of a million shots and he had to gently inform me that there would not be enough time to accomplish all of that. While these are not necessarily the shots we hang on our walls, they are images we cherish just like the rest of our collection. My husbands grandmother is no longer with us, but she was in those group shots. My mom doesn't dance or do any socializing so the only shots of her from our wedding were in the group shots. I know they take some time to do, and it's always the most tedious part of your wedding, but you'll be happy you did. Because we don't post them and show them off that much I thought I would put together a blog post with group shots so you can see our approach to wedding group shots and see that these aren't your momma's group shots, they're all your own.

Thanks for looking.

Elizabeth -N- Rich - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Wedding PhotographerElizabeth -N- Rich are from Rochester, NY. They moved to Austin just this last year. They decided to have a small, very small, ceremony in Austin to commemorate their union. They're planning a big reception in their home town this spring. Their guests included both sets of parents and themselves at the Zilker Botanical Gardens. They held their reception dinner at Red's Porch on South Lamar, which was proceeded with pints of beer and games of washers, of course.Austin Wedding Photography

I am madly in love with Hacienda del Lago, which you may already know I cannot stop singing their praises, the location is completely out of control. I shot a bridal portrait out there in September 2009 and feel in love with one particular image, the bride in her long flowey dress walking on the path toward the house at exactly the right time of light. It reminded me of Palm Springs circa 1960. So I started researching the era, decor, fashion, and style. I met with Margaret Bedikian of 3 Apples Events and we together poured over more images from the era, and with that, our concept and visuals really came together and started to take shape. We got together with Kari Shelton of Wow Factor Design Co., brilliant. Armed with our concept and colors Margaret found Wicked Cakes who made our awesome inspired cake and Paige's Bake House who made those completely adorable and  absolutely delicious Petit Fours. The models were a no brainer, a couple we worked with for their wedding in February, who have become a part of our family, Brandi and Lee Barnwell. None of this could be possible with out fantastic styling from Shannon Yarbrough without whom we would have no dresses (Linda AsafBlush BridalBella Saison) headpieces and accessories (Tracy TenpennyMillistar) or men's where. Rentals from Premier Party Central who supplied us with all of the white for our backdrop. Austin Catering created those bite sized pieces of pure art on a plate and lastly Brizy Tait of Keep Austin Gorgeous knocked it off the charts with her beautiful hair and make-up.
