Brooke and Nick's rainy day Mercury Hall Wedding. Austin, Tx by Melanie Grizzel

2016-02-08_0002.jpg

Brooke and Nick rainy day Mercury Hall Wedding, Austin, Tx.

From Brooke:

Planning: The planning went well, I’m glad we gave ourselves a long engagement to think about things we wanted and to shop around. We did a good job sharing responsibilities, in fact I have to credit Nick with moving things along, I am really thankful that he wanted to be involved and help coordinate things. We’re both thankful for Rachelle, our 30-day coordinator at Mercury Hall. She did a great job answering our questions and helping us figure out last minute items, and on the day of the wedding it was such a relief knowing she was there to make it all run smoothly!

Favorite Memory: So many highlights come to mind, for both of us! For Nick, his highlights were seeing me for the first time in my dress, and giving his toast. For me, it was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Nick in front of me, and hearing all the loving remarks from my sister Kate, brother-in-law Peter, dad Rolfe, and of course Nick!

Wish you knew then: For Nick, the décor details are things you shouldn’t waste a lot of time or money on, most people don’t remember those things anyway. For me, I wish I hadn’t worried so much about how everyone was going to get along. Everyone there showed me so much love and support.

The Caldwell Family celebrates Fin! He's one year old! by Melanie Grizzel

Sweet little Fin Fin turned one in December. He loves to get down and dance, playing in fall leaves, to feeding his the minpin purple cookies. He's precious and patient. and just adores being hung upside down or otherwise tossed about. So basically, he's 2.2016-01-24_0001.jpg 2016-01-24_0003.jpg 2016-01-24_0004.jpg 2016-01-24_0006.jpg 2016-01-24_0002.jpg 2016-01-24_0005.jpg 2016-01-24_0007.jpg 2016-01-24_0008.jpg 2016-01-24_0009.jpg 2016-01-24_0011.jpg 2016-01-24_0010.jpg 2016-01-24_0012.jpg 2016-01-24_0013.jpg 2016-01-24_0015.jpg 2016-01-24_0014.jpg 2016-01-24_0016.jpg 2016-01-24_0017.jpg 2016-01-24_0018.jpg 2016-01-24_0019.jpg 2016-01-24_0020.jpg 2016-01-24_0021.jpg 2016-01-24_0022.jpg 2016-01-24_0023.jpg 2016-01-24_0024.jpg 2016-01-24_0025.jpg 2016-01-24_0026.jpg 2016-01-24_0027.jpg 2016-01-24_0028.jpg 2016-01-24_0030.jpg

Thao -N- John / An Austin Wedding at the Hummingbird House by Melanie Grizzel

2015-07-06_0001.jpg

from Thao and John:

I suppose it was about the time I realized my wedding would be less of a Grace Kelly affair, and something a bit closer to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when I started to really enjoy my day.  All the little, silly details start to blur into a vaseline lens view, and you realize all the things important.  That's when I was not only excited to marry my lifetime lover, but when I fell in love with my friends and family all over again.  My fondest memories of my wedding are seeing my friends and family gather in full force to help fold napkins while singing railroad songs, drive newly make-up'd bridal parties in un-air-conditioned minivans, aunts (well, one in particular) charging into the changing room just because she deserved to be there, uncles with cameras wielded more boisterously than the most seasoned paparazzi, cousins who were supposed to be guests instead transform into freelance wedding coordinators.  That's when you realize how much love surrounds you, that people you love so much are so willing to sacrifice time and distance away from their busy lives, Mother's day and birthdays put on hold, just to be with you and help you, to celebrate you and the love of your life.  And then, of course, there's my husband.  Who stood at the end of the aisle, crying like a newborn babe.  That was my absolute favorite part of the wedding--seeing that one person you want to be with most on this Earth, wanting the very same thing.  It brings me to tears again just thinking of our wonderful vows.  There were butterflies.  Not like in Disney movies, but real live butterflies floating in the air as we uttered lifelong promises to each other in front of those friends and family we hold dearly.  The wedding day was a blur, but the bits and pieces that I keep are some of the most valuable I have, and I will treasure them for as long as we both shall live.

Thao says:

Oh how do I count the ways?! Mel can do no wrong in my eyes.  While still awaiting my wedding pictures, I have NO RESERVATIONS about recommending her over and over and over again (and in fact, already spread her gospel amongst my newly engaged friends).  Why?  Because she is talent incarnate.  And a lot of fun.  But her talent and fun are only icing on a massive, moist cake of professionalism.  Her work is absolutely incredible--our engagement pictures were fun, unique, and vibrant with life and love.  She was flexible, yet inspired throughout, and took our ideas and made it her own.  I LOVED our engagement pictures and the three wedding shots I've seen--especially because I was a bit camera-shy with some self-doubt.  She made it all go away with a few camera flashes, and has the uncanny ability of seeing (and capturing) the beauty in anyone, regardless of how long she's known you.  She's willing to try new ideas and methods, yet experienced enough to know what looks best.  She is reliable, timely and responsive.  She guides without being overbearing--hell, she even talked me down during my one bridezilla moment when the family was pulling me here and there during family photo time in a cathedral veil under the Texan sun (think Hatfields and McCoys, except both factions come from my side of the family).  She is truly a gem--while everyone else makes you feel like you're just another bride-cog in the wedding-machine, Mel actually made me feel beautiful on the most important day to feel beautiful.  And for that memory and keepsake?  I'm forever grateful...

Samantha's Bridal Session at Sawyer & Co / Austin Bridal Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

50's themed bridal photography session at Sawyer and Co.

Samantha Perry Brown is a little off beat, note her idea for her and now husband Jon's engagement session - levitating engagement session in austin, tx! check it out I knew we were going to find something a little different and fun for her Austin bridal session. She snagged a charming little short cocktail length wedding gown from Stephanie James custom. It was a lacy off white wedding dress with scalloped bodice and a pink bow sewn right into the front of the gown. This adorable wedding dress has obvious 50's look to it and I wanted to honor the era by photographing her at a 50's style lunch counter in Austin called Sawyer & Co. Barely open a year Sawyer and Co was the perfect backdrop for this 50's themed bridal session. There is one one more 50's style restaurants in Austin I am just aching to shoot in. the food is good and the ambiance is amazing, you be the judge. check it out. 1950's themed bridal portrait session at Sawyer and Co. in Austin, Tx. Emily -N- Blake / Inn at Wild Rose Hall / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

So we decided on the beautiful and rustic hill country venue of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. I wore a short dress. The groomsmen wore jeans, the bridesmaids wore mix match navy dresses. And there were
Cowboy Boots! Lots of them. Both bride and groom wore Lucchese ;) I always loved the vintage feel of a birdcage veil, so I picked that, and rocked it, I must say.We served Matt's El Rancho, one of our favorite Austin Tex Mex joints. We served amazing cupcakes by the ever so talented Megan DuBois of Queen of the Frontier, she also created the rustic and beautiful display, mostly a collection of family dishes.
Did I mention I collect Coca Cola antiques? Because let me tell you my favorite part of our wedding. Well, other than marrying my knight. I had my florist Zinnia and Co. fill old wooden antique Coca Cola crates with beautiful baby's breath, billy balls, and candles. It was exactly how I pictured it in my head. Rustic, vintage, simple, casual, welcoming, warm, and unique.
We danced the night away and our wedding party did not dissapoint. We closed the place down with a 20 minute encore of Michael Jackson classics. Everything was perfectly and seamlessly stages and executed by Leah Robertson from Austin Elite.
I think one of my favorite moments was walking towards Blake, my arm wrapped up in my father's. This was it. It was finally here. And amongst all this planning and details, it came down to one thing. He was handsome, he was strong, he looked not-nervous. He looked happy. He looked ready. I am so proud of the man he has become and I can't wait for the years ahead of us

Charlie Heras - Austin Children's Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

austin infant photographer Charlie Heras. The newest addition to the Heras Family. We had the pleasure of photographing Linsey and Marcos' wedding last year and they are a positively delightful family. So we were honored when we were asked to photograph sweet little Charlie and big brother Ben for their first family portrait. Unfortunately, Marcos was working.  Next time for sure.

Amanda -N- Jason - a destination elopement - Inn at Wild Rose Hall - Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

hand made, DIY, button bouquet, blue, Inn Wild Rose Hall Amanda and Jason met on an online dating service. Perfect match. They love the same things, they laugh at each other's jokes. They are so fun. To say that Amanda is obsessed with owls would be a gross understatement. When Jason proposed to Amanda he rented and wore a gigantic owl costume and she only knew it was him cause she spotted his shoes underneath. She said yes and the date was set for July 3. Then somewhere in the mix they decided to instead elope. They found a location, The Inn at Wild Rose Hall in Austin, Tx from Offbeat Bride. Austin was not a place that either had ever been. They picked it out of the clear blue sky from only having seen the  pictures on Offbeat Bride. They invited all of their guests to an engagement party on May 15 in WI. Jason even took a call from one of their guests and said "Yeah, we're right around the corner."

They and their 2 guests, myself and their officiant turned off our cell phones and turned on the cameras and the rest is history. It was a  elopement. They also had a reception for friends and relatives in WI on their planned July 3rd.

Amanda is a DIYer and she made her bouquet, the boutonnieres, handbags for she and her "bridesmaids," and invitations.  She carried it all to Austin in their suitcases. She wore her Grandmother's pearls and a very Marilyn gown. They hired a personal chef to prepare their first meal as husband and wife, The Red Headed Chef. What did they have you ask? Diner food. Omelets, bacon, home-fries, and local artisan bread. And to complete their quadruple threat of great Austin vendors, The Knot Tyer. He really took the time to get to know them and was able to connect with them even before they came for their wedding day. It was one of our favorites.

Keri -N- Justin - A wedding at Vineyard at Florence - Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

bride and groom vineyard weddings Keri and Justin, adorable, no? And totally amazing. So much fun to spend time with and that's how photographing their wedding felt, like we were guests. The were married in an intimate service at The Vineyard at Florence. There wanted to keep it simple so they did not have a wedding party, their flowers, from Petal Pushers, were extraordinary. Hair and Make-up by the super amazingly talented miss Erica Gray. Southern's fine dining kicked off the party with down home cooking including fried green tomatoes. yummo!

We met quite a while ago and with some pressing we figured out that Keri and my sister (who lives in D/FW) used to work together. weird. small world.

Meejin -N- Jay - A Barr Mansion Wedding - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Bride and Groom at BArr Mansion Meejin and Jay's perfect-but-not-fussy wedding at Barr Mansion. It was stunning and also comfortable, low key. During their first look, Meejin's grandpa was walking out of the restroom and made it into some of their first look shots. Meejin was hysterical. I love that! Let your day be your day!  It was one of the loveliest weddings I have ever had the pleasure of photographing. Single stem flowers in several different vases of varying colors and sizes from Stems floral, the groomsman in mixed-matched vintage snap button shirts with suspenders, table assignments painted on panes of window glass, and Meejin hand-painted their cake topper. Wow!

You might remember them from their animal-loving engagement session at the Austin Zoo.

Megan -N- Tim Engaged! - Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Engagement photography Megan has been besties with one of our December brides since they were babies. She caught wind of Audrey's engagement session on facebook. Flash forward, Tim proposes to Miss DuBois in May and now it's Megan's turn for a portrait session. She chose a fishing themed engagement session. We had such a fun time traipsing through the low water rising in a small low key park in Kyle Texas. It was gorgeous, I just love when our couples are married to an idea it makes things so wonderful and inspiring to photograph. Congratulations guys!

Brandi Barnwell - Austin Portrait Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

austin portrait inspirationI was editing a wedding we photographed last spring, last spring... don't panic. I tend to find inspiration in things I've already photographed and this was no exception. I found an image of a young girl with a happy smile sans toothy grin. I was so taken with it I printed it and hung it on my inspiretion wall for further exploration. Then I was recently challenged to make new work and I put a team together and created this. It's meant to marry the image I love,  and the color profile of Anthropology. Here we are, enjoy. More to come if I can find the right models and get our team back together for 5am weekday calls. dress shop austin

My B - personal - Austin Children Photography by Melanie Grizzel

at home childrens photographer I had a beautiful baby boy 2+ years ago. I had all of these ideas about what kids would mean to me.

baby portrait austin

My mom, while she had to work extra hard to keep us in food and clothes, was an ideal example of what parenting was/is. She loves wholly. It's hard to describe that perfect kind of love.  I remember bits about my childhood and life with her and just remember always feeling like I was wrapped in a warm embrace. I thought for sure that would be the type of parent I would be, think only of my children and making all of my decisions based on their welfare, exclusively. I'm not like my mom, I have a million interests and a career I LOVE. I spend a fair amount of time away from my son, and for a while I thought he didn't care for me too much.  I recently took him to meet his new baby cousin Rhett when he was born and I had my son on my own for 3 days. No Daddy.  No Nanny.  I was scared. How would I handle every moment on my own?

It's amazing to me that there are people out there that love children so much they want to work with them all day.  Our Nanny and my mom would easily take a child on their own and play all day and do all the things a child would like the entire day. I like doing laundry and dishes (not really, but I DO like when they're done.) How can I do all of the things in life and still give my child all of the things he needs like college, cottage cheese and playtime? He went through a particularly bad period where he would whine constantly.  As a parent I thought you can tell what's wrong with your kid, but that was on average. Everyday he would whine and I wouldn't know what the problem was but that I knew he couldn't express himself and this was the base of his frustration. WOW this was a rough patch.  Sometimes I can say I wasn't sure if I even liked him, every day was a struggle and I would think why did we have kids again?

Then today I woke up and he was laying on his belly three feet from the cat and asking her "What's your name?" I said "Her name is Mamma, she doesn't talk like you." He ignored this altogether and proceeded with, "Kitty, what's your name?" With that my heart swelled to an unprecedented size and burst into a million baby hearts. On our one-on-one trip to see his baby cousin that immediately trailed a family trip to New York, we bonded. We really connected, his health is good and he is learning everyday more words and putting phrases together. We started with, during his terribly rough patch, "May I have _____, please" it really helped to curb the whining, and he is very capable now. He uses the phrase for everything "May I have cottage cheese, please?" for obvious reasons. And "May I have playground please?" when he wants to go play. And when I wasn't pushing his swing fast enough "May I have higher please?"

Now I know if he is crabby which is usually once every couple of weeks, it's probably because he is tired or bored. We're told all the time what an easy child he is, which is always followed with, "wait till the next one!" usually with a little snicker... Oh yeah?! maybe we just make good kids.

sleeping baby photography

his beloved Bunny Bear, never leaves home without him. Neither do we ;)

Raising a child is a balancing act, with each success there is a usually a new challenge.  In our case, he can communicate but that means he can now express a preference to sleep in our bed instead of his own. Just when you think you've got this child rearing thing tapped, a new situation presents itself. You discuss with your spouse what the next move should be and implement. Then hopefully that problem is solved and you can ride a 2 to 3 day parenting success wave before there is a new issue you get to work on. When my son was due I was scared out of my mind. Not only, "Will I be a good parent?" but also "How do I keep an infant breathing?" these were my concerns. I had a good friend tell me, "God wouldn't present you with a problem you can't solve." Luckily all of those problems don't come at once. It is years worth of weekly challenges, but with each issue comes real hugs.  "I you too," which is Bishop speak for I love you,  and this....

Sometimes I think my heart may burst with happiness.

I am madly in love with Hacienda del Lago, which you may already know I cannot stop singing their praises, the location is completely out of control. I shot a bridal portrait out there in September 2009 and feel in love with one particular image, the bride in her long flowey dress walking on the path toward the house at exactly the right time of light. It reminded me of Palm Springs circa 1960. So I started researching the era, decor, fashion, and style. I met with Margaret Bedikian of 3 Apples Events and we together poured over more images from the era, and with that, our concept and visuals really came together and started to take shape. We got together with Kari Shelton of Wow Factor Design Co., brilliant. Armed with our concept and colors Margaret found Wicked Cakes who made our awesome inspired cake and Paige's Bake House who made those completely adorable and  absolutely delicious Petit Fours. The models were a no brainer, a couple we worked with for their wedding in February, who have become a part of our family, Brandi and Lee Barnwell. None of this could be possible with out fantastic styling from Shannon Yarbrough without whom we would have no dresses (Linda AsafBlush BridalBella Saison) headpieces and accessories (Tracy TenpennyMillistar) or men's where. Rentals from Premier Party Central who supplied us with all of the white for our backdrop. Austin Catering created those bite sized pieces of pure art on a plate and lastly Brizy Tait of Keep Austin Gorgeous knocked it off the charts with her beautiful hair and make-up.
