The Bride’s Thoughts

"Our wedding was April 2, 2016 at Montesino Ranch in Wimberley, Texas. We had approximately 140 guests. We fell in love with Montesino when we first visited in 2015 when we started our wedding venue search. We wanted the style of the wedding to fit the venue and because Montesino itself is so beautiful very little decorations were needed. As far as wedding planning, our engagement was a little over a year. However, in that year I moved back from Seattle, we bought a house, I started a new job, and we started renovating the house. Needless to say, it was a busy year but we just chipped away at the wedding planning a little at a time and it all came together quite nicely at the end. The most important thing to both Eric and me was that we wanted it to be a fun weekend for all of our friends and family. I think we were both extremely calm on the day of the wedding because we had talked about how it didn't matter if we got off of our timeline or if some small detail went wrong. At the end of the day, we wanted it to be a laid back celebration and fun party." - Carolyn

One of the best things a creative person can do is self assignments. In our day-to-day work, we have have many bosses with different needs and personalities and we're so fortunate to work with some of the most amazing people. However, I have learned how important it is to occasionally step outside the routine and ask myself, "What do I want to produce?" This was one of those projects. I am lucky enough to be able to work frequently with the incredibly talented hair and make-up stylist, Erica Gray. And in this case, she was the clothing stylist and casting director as well! These self assignments help me be me. To find my creative voice and scream loud. We shot this back in March of this year, but as you know, we get busy editing and processing falls through the cracks. At least we had it in the can already ;) Enjoy. And I'd love to hear what you think.

The Peterson's newest addition - Austin Lifestyle Newborn Photography #GrowingRiley / November 2, 2015 by Melanie Grizzel

I got to spend the morning with the Peterson's who, just one week before, became parents for the very first time. The house was dark and smelled of fresh diapers. There were baby blankets, used dishes, boppies and wipes everywhere. And two wide-eyed, sleepy new parents getting the hang of it. It was exhilarating. They had a better handle on parenthood in 5 days then I remember having in that amount of time. #naturals It also just so happened to be the couple's 3rd wedding anniversary. They had a circus themed wedding at Hummingbird House click here to have a look. They haven't changed much, there is already a video of Nathan holding Riley in a Kangaroo pouch and juggling. And Jessica has taken a few shots of herself and Riley suspended on the silks. Our favorite circus family added new talent. I can't wait to see what she becomes.

Most little girls always dream about their wedding day from a small age. I was definitely no different. We settled on Austin since its always been my favorite city in Texas and most of Mike's family lives in Bastrop. From the moment I stepped out on the balcony of the main house in Barr Mansion I knew this was the place I wanted to marry my husband. Shanna made the planning process super easy and stress free. Planning a wedding in a town where you don't live isn't the easiest thing in the world. Without my mother Nelda's help, and a little input from the groom, our wedding wouldn't have been as amazing as it turned out to be.

Our wedding day was just as magnificent and full of love as I always hoped it would be. My cousin who lives out of the country was able to not only attend the wedding but perform the ceremony. We tried to incorporate family touches throughout the wedding, whether it was having our guests sign the love seat Mike's dad made for us or playing significant music leading up to the wedding.

Sure our wedding was like any other in that there were a few hiccups, like the ring bearer dropping the rings while walking down the aisle. At the end of the day there wasn't anything that could take away from the beauty of the day where two became one. No, your wedding day isn't going to go completely as planned and yes, it will be a big blur once its all over. I expected I would have more time to talk to the guests and socialize but it all went by so fast, as everyone said it would. I gave up trying to talk to everyone and just hoped that if they really wanted to talk to us, they would come find us. I wish I could re-live it several times over. It was that much fun.

Thank you Mel for getting my picture hating husband to cooperate (for the most part). I can't wait to see the finished product! You made taking pictures effortless and fun. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat and not change a thing.

From Laura: "...I don't know that I would change anything in regards to planning other than being more prepared when I went in to talk with the florist. I kind of went in blank and it would have expedited things had I had a clear idea of what I wanted. Also, I was happy we didn't overdue it with flowers and just kept it minimal. I loved incorporating food and cake that we adored and music that had meaning to us. I am really happy we made our own playlist as that saved money and made it more personal. Lastly, including friends and family to do hair, makeup, officiate, do music also made it more of a personal and intimate affair. "

When we talk about our wedding, we always say we wouldn't have it any other way. We were challenge by the historic and tragic flooding of Austin and the surrounding areas including the Kyle, San Marcos, and Wimberley communities. We worked nearly a year for this moment and it was on the brink of being cancelled all together. However, on wedding day, we couldn't help but to be fixated on the local news reports, learning that I-35 was closed just south of the exit that was needed to get to the venue. But on this day, our day, the sky cleared and the sun peaked out. It was also surprisingly cooler than expected even though it was a late May weekend in Texas. It was a sign to us that this marriage was meant to be and the celebration of our families coming together went as planned nearly 8 years in the making from when Natalie and I first met. After all the dramatic weather, crunch-time planning, it ended up being the most beautiful day we've ever lived. The next day we set out on our honeymoon. About a month before, we were upset about American Airlines moving up our departure to Kauai 2 hours, but in the end we were actually blessed because if we would have left at our originally scheduled time, we would have lost a day due to travelling delays at the airport. Yet another storm swept through the Austin area just after we departed for Kauai that caused damaging floods and our out-of-state relatives that had flights just 2 hours after us were at the airport the rest of the day. #blessed (insert hallelujah emoji hands here) lol

Not sure I can say much about anything I would have changed in the planning part. I guess our digital "Save The Date" is before its time. I can see this being the new thing in the future, but some of our guests didn't receive it. (Maybe Natalie can touch on this planning part)

The most important planning was of course the photography! :) But seriously, that doesn't compare to what Sharon and Natalie had to do in the planning part so I can't answer specifically. What stood out to me on the day was how fast everything went (everyone says that, but you really don't understand until you're the bride and groom). We did have to follow a Hays County curfew too :). So don't get stuck on the tiny details, spend your efforts on the DJ, food, photography, your dance moves, then laugh and have fun!

Valerie -N- Curtis an engagement session before the dawn at the Long Center and the empty streets and alleys of South Congress. They parked their motorcycle and moped in an a nearby parking lot and surprised me with them! They pulled them out for fun just as soon as our morning got started. It was such a fun addition! They discovered their mutual love for 2 wheels when she gave him a lift home on her scooter after they met at ACL. He knew she was the one right away but she needed a little convincing. So he won her over with a series of playful snapchats. and the the rest is history. Soon they'll say "I do."
