Planning: The planning went well, I’m glad we gave ourselves a long engagement to think about things we wanted and to shop around. We did a good job sharing responsibilities, in fact I have to credit Nick with moving things along, I am really thankful that he wanted to be involved and help coordinate things. We’re both thankful for Rachelle, our 30-day coordinator at Mercury Hall. She did a great job answering our questions and helping us figure out last minute items, and on the day of the wedding it was such a relief knowing she was there to make it all run smoothly!

Favorite Memory: So many highlights come to mind, for both of us! For Nick, his highlights were seeing me for the first time in my dress, and giving his toast. For me, it was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Nick in front of me, and hearing all the loving remarks from my sister Kate, brother-in-law Peter, dad Rolfe, and of course Nick!

Wish you knew then: For Nick, the décor details are things you shouldn’t waste a lot of time or money on, most people don’t remember those things anyway. For me, I wish I hadn’t worried so much about how everyone was going to get along. Everyone there showed me so much love and support.

The Caldwell Family celebrates Fin! He's one year old!

Sweet little Fin Fin turned one in December. He loves to get down and dance, playing in fall leaves, to feeding his the minpin purple cookies. He's precious and patient. and just adores being hung upside down or otherwise tossed about. So basically, he's 2.

Shameem's peaceful and loving - Austin Maternity Photography Session

Shameem and Amaar met on a blind date  years ago and the couple had to date long distance fora long time while Shameem worked for her residency in New England. The couple married in the California wine country with an intimate group of family before they threw a blow out wedding reception in Austin in December 2012 click here to see their gorgeous wedding reception at Barton Creek Resort. They bought a house in the sweetest little neighborhood (perfect for thier coming family) in South austin while she wrapped up her time in Bostom. They finally get to be together all the time when she took a position near San Antonio and moved to Austin full time. We had such a wonderful time together for their wedding that they vowed to always keep me in the loop when their family had milestones and here we are. We haven't seen each other much since then, just casual conversation (and recipe exchanges) on social media, until now. The incredibly lovely, and almost sticky sweet, Shameem is expecting their first child. A baby girl coming soon. My all time favorite thing about this session is the second shot in the collection. I asked Shameem what kind of a husband Amaar is turning out to be and and her smile was so rich and spoke volumes about their happiness. I am so thrilled to follow my couple's (new family's) paths as they go through life reaching goals and hitting milestones. It's more rewarding than I ever imagined.

I suppose it was about the time I realized my wedding would be less of a Grace Kelly affair, and something a bit closer to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when I started to really enjoy my day.  All the little, silly details start to blur into a vaseline lens view, and you realize all the things important.  That's when I was not only excited to marry my lifetime lover, but when I fell in love with my friends and family all over again.  My fondest memories of my wedding are seeing my friends and family gather in full force to help fold napkins while singing railroad songs, drive newly make-up'd bridal parties in un-air-conditioned minivans, aunts (well, one in particular) charging into the changing room just because she deserved to be there, uncles with cameras wielded more boisterously than the most seasoned paparazzi, cousins who were supposed to be guests instead transform into freelance wedding coordinators.  That's when you realize how much love surrounds you, that people you love so much are so willing to sacrifice time and distance away from their busy lives, Mother's day and birthdays put on hold, just to be with you and help you, to celebrate you and the love of your life.  And then, of course, there's my husband.  Who stood at the end of the aisle, crying like a newborn babe.  That was my absolute favorite part of the wedding--seeing that one person you want to be with most on this Earth, wanting the very same thing.  It brings me to tears again just thinking of our wonderful vows.  There were butterflies.  Not like in Disney movies, but real live butterflies floating in the air as we uttered lifelong promises to each other in front of those friends and family we hold dearly.  The wedding day was a blur, but the bits and pieces that I keep are some of the most valuable I have, and I will treasure them for as long as we both shall live.

Oh how do I count the ways?! Mel can do no wrong in my eyes.  While still awaiting my wedding pictures, I have NO RESERVATIONS about recommending her over and over and over again (and in fact, already spread her gospel amongst my newly engaged friends).  Why?  Because she is talent incarnate.  And a lot of fun.  But her talent and fun are only icing on a massive, moist cake of professionalism.  Her work is absolutely incredible--our engagement pictures were fun, unique, and vibrant with life and love.  She was flexible, yet inspired throughout, and took our ideas and made it her own.  I LOVED our engagement pictures and the three wedding shots I've seen--especially because I was a bit camera-shy with some self-doubt.  She made it all go away with a few camera flashes, and has the uncanny ability of seeing (and capturing) the beauty in anyone, regardless of how long she's known you.  She's willing to try new ideas and methods, yet experienced enough to know what looks best.  She is reliable, timely and responsive.  She guides without being overbearing--hell, she even talked me down during my one bridezilla moment when the family was pulling me here and there during family photo time in a cathedral veil under the Texan sun (think Hatfields and McCoys, except both factions come from my side of the family).  She is truly a gem--while everyone else makes you feel like you're just another bride-cog in the wedding-machine, Mel actually made me feel beautiful on the most important day to feel beautiful.  And for that memory and keepsake?  I'm forever grateful...

Samantha Perry Brown is a little off beat, note her idea for her and now husband Jon's engagement session - levitating engagement session in austin, tx! check it out I knew we were going to find something a little different and fun for her Austin bridal session. She snagged a charming little short cocktail length wedding gown from Stephanie James custom. It was a lacy off white wedding dress with scalloped bodice and a pink bow sewn right into the front of the gown. This adorable wedding dress has obvious 50's look to it and I wanted to honor the era by photographing her at a 50's style lunch counter in Austin called Sawyer & Co. Barely open a year Sawyer and Co was the perfect backdrop for this 50's themed bridal session. The whole day went as planned thanks to our amazing vendors, family, wedding party, and especially my mom, who was invaluable from start to finish, I couldn't have done it without her! Planning the event was super easy with Jessica Brightwell at Pearl Events. She was there every step of the way with awesome tips, schedules, and checklists. She-n-He made photo sessions a breeze with their laid back attitude, funny sense of humor, and great appreciation for highlighting personality in photos. Word of Mouth catering exceeded my expectations with their super helpful staff and delicious food. 

For me, one of my favorite aspects of our wedding was the atmosphere and tone for our special day. It was important for us to create a fun filled atmosphere in a space that friends and family would be comfortable. Carrie at Flora Fetish transformed Umlauf Sculpture Gardens into an electrifying, fun, "vintage with a twist" venue that entertained our guests to no end! With her help, we were able to highlight our personalities with games, quirky accents, and style.

The only thing I would change is to spend less time on the dance floor and a little more time to allow myself to sit back and take it all in. Time flew by and I know there were many aspects of the wedding that I missed!

Our wedding day was the best day of my life. Even though the day went by faster than I can believe, I'll never forget how very fortunate I am to have had so many great people, family, and supporters who helped create such an amazing day.

So we decided on the beautiful and rustic hill country venue of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. I wore a short dress. The groomsmen wore jeans, the bridesmaids wore mix match navy dresses. And there were

Cowboy Boots! Lots of them. Both bride and groom wore Lucchese ;) I always loved the vintage feel of a birdcage veil, so I picked that, and rocked it, I must say.We served Matt's El Rancho, one of our favorite Austin Tex Mex joints. We served amazing cupcakes by the ever so talented Megan DuBois of Queen of the Frontier, she also created the rustic and beautiful display, mostly a collection of family dishes.

Did I mention I collect Coca Cola antiques? Because let me tell you my favorite part of our wedding. Well, other than marrying my knight. I had my florist Zinnia and Co. fill old wooden antique Coca Cola crates with beautiful baby's breath, billy balls, and candles. It was exactly how I pictured it in my head. Rustic, vintage, simple, casual, welcoming, warm, and unique.

We danced the night away and our wedding party did not dissapoint. We closed the place down with a 20 minute encore of Michael Jackson classics. Everything was perfectly and seamlessly stages and executed by Leah Robertson from Austin Elite.

I think one of my favorite moments was walking towards Blake, my arm wrapped up in my father's. This was it. It was finally here. And amongst all this planning and details, it came down to one thing. He was handsome, he was strong, he looked not-nervous. He looked happy. He looked ready. I am so proud of the man he has become and I can't wait for the years ahead of us

I love these guys! They were super easy-going and could bend and mold when we suddenly were kicked out of the location I chose for them... oops. It was a good one though, worth the first 30 minutes without notice. So they were able to take it in and move quickly and all was not lost.

Baggett Commercial Trucking / Austin Lifestyle / Advertising Photographer

 

My favorite Art-buyer recently relocated with his family to Florida. But before he left, he recommended me for this project. Hare Communications is based out of Alabama, but they had subjects trucking their way through Texas and needed to have this couple photographed before they made delivery and went on home for a much needed rest. Baggett (trucking) prides itself on the family aspect of their business. Their employees are well paid, well insured and overall loved, like family. Baggett has the highest number of husband and wife team drivers than any other freight company. The tag is "Driving for Baggett is like working with family. Only it pays better."

Above is Dennis and Abigail, they have been married for ten years and driving for eight. Dennis says it was tough in the beginning to work that closely together, but now he gets nervous when she's more than eight feet away ;) They are as sweet and charming as they look. I was pleased to work with them!

Erica Gray - Make-up artist / Austin Lifestyle - Portrait Photographer

 

Back in December, Erica Gray, Austin make-up artist extraordinaire, asked me to photograph her for a print to give to her mother for Christmas. A) I was delighted she asked me, it's always a super charge when someone in the industry who really knows work chooses you - like!  B) I love her! Not only is her work absolutely amazing (one of my favorites!), but she is completely hilarious and wonderful to have on set. Also, we both spent a number of years in New York City working on similar projects so we know a lot of the same people and places. She is beautiful, obviously, and a pleasure to be around. That makes for a perfect afternoon. And seriously, look at that light, does it get any better than that?! No, is the answer.

I am developing a new commercial portfolio to re-enter that market and this was a perfect opportunity to flex those lifestyle photography muscles. Thank you Erica.

K+K / Vista West Ranch Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer

Katie and Kieran met in New York City while working as copywriters for an ad agency. Katie is from Houston while Kieran is from New York. To celebrate the great distance they crossed to come together, and in honor of all the worldly places their guests traveled from, they created a lavish destination affair.

Their centerpieces and table numbers were custom designed maps of locales that the couple hold dear to them including Manhattan, Mexico and Austin. Carrying the theme of travel throughout the wedding, K+K added to their guests' escort cards the couples favorite travel destinations. They also included nods to their host city of Austin with charming cowboy boots, BBQ from Gourmet Gals and Guys, and tabasco sauce party favors. Their awesome wedding color combo of turquoise and pink was in every detail including bridesmaid's dresses, flowers from Petal Pushers and a 4 tiered pink gradient wedding cake by Simon Lee Bakery. The whole affair was pulled together perfectly by Aimee Villa of Lizze Belle Event Planning

Kieran mentioned during their engagement session that Katie requests or plays "Boot Scoot Boogie" everywhere they go in New York. hmmm, sounds familiar. With the Matt Wilson Band at the helm there was not a still moment on their dance floor. It was an amazing Sunday evening with the most perfect sunset. A day any couple would proudly relive again and again.

Jenna -N- Ricardo met while attending the University of Texas. Ricardo graduated and moved to NYC to work in finance, Jenna stuck around to wrap up her degree and one year later followed. They recently relocated to Jersey City where they're happy and have a bigger space. Their wedding will be held next year at the Hummingbird House and they plan to resume their residence in the tri-state area, at least for a little while. I'm jealous. Charlie Heras. The newest addition to the Heras Family. We had the pleasure of photographing Linsey and Marcos' wedding last year and they are a positively delightful family. So we were honored when we were asked to photograph sweet little Charlie and big brother Ben for their first family portrait. Unfortunately, Marcos was working.  Next time for sure.
