Kelly -N- Jeff Married! - Inn at Wild Rose Hall - Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Bridal Extravaganza Kelly and Jeffrey met while she was tending bar in Washington DC and attending school. She vowed she would not date a customer, but slipped him her number on a CC receipt and the rest is history. They currently live in the Bay area. They chose to have a wedding in Austin, Tx because she has family here.

It was important to them to leave a small carbon footprint so she used all locally-sourced vendors. Including hand-picking wild flowers from a Arnosky Wildflower Farm. Their entire vegan menu and cupcakes came from Green Island Catering. They also wanted to work with local woman-owned businesses The Inn at Wild Rose Hall and She-N-He among them.

Brandi Barnwell - Austin Portrait Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

austin portrait inspirationI was editing a wedding we photographed last spring, last spring... don't panic. I tend to find inspiration in things I've already photographed and this was no exception. I found an image of a young girl with a happy smile sans toothy grin. I was so taken with it I printed it and hung it on my inspiretion wall for further exploration. Then I was recently challenged to make new work and I put a team together and created this. It's meant to marry the image I love,  and the color profile of Anthropology. Here we are, enjoy. More to come if I can find the right models and get our team back together for 5am weekday calls. dress shop austin

My B - personal - Austin Children Photography by Melanie Grizzel

at home childrens photographer I had a beautiful baby boy 2+ years ago. I had all of these ideas about what kids would mean to me.

baby portrait austin

My mom, while she had to work extra hard to keep us in food and clothes, was an ideal example of what parenting was/is. She loves wholly. It's hard to describe that perfect kind of love.  I remember bits about my childhood and life with her and just remember always feeling like I was wrapped in a warm embrace. I thought for sure that would be the type of parent I would be, think only of my children and making all of my decisions based on their welfare, exclusively. I'm not like my mom, I have a million interests and a career I LOVE. I spend a fair amount of time away from my son, and for a while I thought he didn't care for me too much.  I recently took him to meet his new baby cousin Rhett when he was born and I had my son on my own for 3 days. No Daddy.  No Nanny.  I was scared. How would I handle every moment on my own?

It's amazing to me that there are people out there that love children so much they want to work with them all day.  Our Nanny and my mom would easily take a child on their own and play all day and do all the things a child would like the entire day. I like doing laundry and dishes (not really, but I DO like when they're done.) How can I do all of the things in life and still give my child all of the things he needs like college, cottage cheese and playtime? He went through a particularly bad period where he would whine constantly.  As a parent I thought you can tell what's wrong with your kid, but that was on average. Everyday he would whine and I wouldn't know what the problem was but that I knew he couldn't express himself and this was the base of his frustration. WOW this was a rough patch.  Sometimes I can say I wasn't sure if I even liked him, every day was a struggle and I would think why did we have kids again?

Then today I woke up and he was laying on his belly three feet from the cat and asking her "What's your name?" I said "Her name is Mamma, she doesn't talk like you." He ignored this altogether and proceeded with, "Kitty, what's your name?" With that my heart swelled to an unprecedented size and burst into a million baby hearts. On our one-on-one trip to see his baby cousin that immediately trailed a family trip to New York, we bonded. We really connected, his health is good and he is learning everyday more words and putting phrases together. We started with, during his terribly rough patch, "May I have _____, please" it really helped to curb the whining, and he is very capable now. He uses the phrase for everything "May I have cottage cheese, please?" for obvious reasons. And "May I have playground please?" when he wants to go play. And when I wasn't pushing his swing fast enough "May I have higher please?"

Now I know if he is crabby which is usually once every couple of weeks, it's probably because he is tired or bored. We're told all the time what an easy child he is, which is always followed with, "wait till the next one!" usually with a little snicker... Oh yeah?! maybe we just make good kids.

sleeping baby photography

his beloved Bunny Bear, never leaves home without him. Neither do we ;)

Raising a child is a balancing act, with each success there is a usually a new challenge.  In our case, he can communicate but that means he can now express a preference to sleep in our bed instead of his own. Just when you think you've got this child rearing thing tapped, a new situation presents itself. You discuss with your spouse what the next move should be and implement. Then hopefully that problem is solved and you can ride a 2 to 3 day parenting success wave before there is a new issue you get to work on. When my son was due I was scared out of my mind. Not only, "Will I be a good parent?" but also "How do I keep an infant breathing?" these were my concerns. I had a good friend tell me, "God wouldn't present you with a problem you can't solve." Luckily all of those problems don't come at once. It is years worth of weekly challenges, but with each issue comes real hugs.  "I you too," which is Bishop speak for I love you,  and this....

Sometimes I think my heart may burst with happiness.

Christy -N- Greg Engaged! - Austin Engagement Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Engagement Photographer

Christy and Greg.

We met while I was shooting a photo booth during a Leap benefit at Seaholm Power Plant. There were a line of attendees and Greg wanted to negotiate his wedding on the spot. But I told him he would just HAVE to come in and chat with me outside of that situation and my candor if what drew them to me. I met Christy again the same week at a wedding event I sent them to, and after that we were golden. So here we are folks, their wedding is tomorrow, on a piece of property her landlord owns, in South Austin. I can hardly wait to see how it's all going to come out, and hopefully a special quick trip for Greg to the fire station after their event. We'll see.

I spoke with Greg yesterday about plans and tomorrow and then about their engagement pictures and it was clear I won over a skeptic. He says the pictures I thought I would like were great but the pictures I wasn't so sure about or that made me feel stupid while we were shooting it look better. Trust is the #2 reason to do an engagement session. If you have the budget and you're waffling. Do it. It's remarkable how much piece of mind it can bring when you already have worked with your photographer.

Cat -N- Brett Engaged! - Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Engagement Photographer Cat and Brett moved to Austin, like yesterday, they are planning their nuptials in Seattle in the fall but wanted to get some sun shiny (no drizzling) shots for their engagement photos. We photographed them here in Austin at The Long Center, Butler Park and Town Lake. Three of the most fantastic locations in Austin. We had such an amazing time working together. Now their Wedding in Seattle has become a Seattle destination wedding for them. Chears to you both. Congratulations!

ZTA - Austin Portrait Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Group Photographer ZTA class of ?

They met at the sorority house and their sisterhood has lived on ever sense. They had their portraits made before they left school, as much as I could gather is was about 5 years ago, they were getting together in San Marcos for Homecoming weekend so they decided to have their progress portraits made. I LOVE this idea. EVERYONE should have professional portraits made, regularly. Thank you ladies, I had a great time working with you.

Omar Lopez - New York Times - Melanie Grizzel by Melanie Grizzel

Austin Wedding PhotographerI met Omar Lopez yesterday at his apartment in Austin. 4 years ago he was booted out of the Navy after spending 3 years at sea during war time for answering yes to a question on a routine blood screen. On October 12th the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy was overturned and on October 13th Omar went down to his local recruitment office to reenlist.

7.9.10 Faith by Melanie Grizzel

Faith is our next door neighbor's daughter. I made arrangements with our good friend Meg, that we would trade 2 year old portraits of faith for a lifetime of babysitting. I win!
Faith was what you call a blue baby, she had a hole in her heart when she was born and Meg and Corby were warned that their first daughter would be whisked away moments after her birth to have open heart surgery. It turned out that she was in a better shape than they thought, they were able to take her home and fatten her up and get her ready for her operation at 3 months old. The doctors explained, they'll notice it in her color. It was true, she was always pale and bluish in the beginning, after her surgery she was decidedly more pink and healthy looking. A few short months after her heart operation she had plastic surgery to correct a cleft lip. In the future, around 16,  she'll have another operation to enlarge the vein going to her heart  and she may choose to have another operation for the scaring near the cleft lip site, but it's virtually unnoticeable. But young woman are their own worst critics, she may still find fault with her scarring. Today she is an exuberant, beautiful, screaming red head with a temper to match. She is the apple of everyone's eye. She's my neighbor.

5.11.10 Senior Lisa by Melanie Grizzel

I may have said it before, but I'll say it again, I just love shooting Seniors. There is so much life and excitement about the next phase of their lives and I feel privileged to be there during that brief cross-road. Plus their really open minded about what is great, they just want to look good-deal ;)
I'm a little bit bummed that Seniors are finished for this season, we'll have to wait until next season Novemberish I guess. Our seniors have been a little slow to get started. We've have had a real difficulty figuring out how to advertise to high-school seniors. We got lucky this year 1 senior found us and sent all of her friends. Thank you Gracie ;) If you find this and you know a senior who is in need of their shots, send them this way.
Thank You.

4.15.10 Gullahorn Family by Melanie Grizzel

Six months ago, or so, I was asked to donate services to a cause I believe in. So Patti bid on our offer and won our services, she wasn't sure what to do with it at first but decided that she would hold onto it until her big birthday she had coming up. So while she had her entire family in town for her birthday we shot her entire family.
It's brief glimpse into what it could be like in such a large family (3boys and 1girl) plus all of their spouses and kids (6 grandkids) and (2 great-grandparents) so in total 15? It's a strange kind  of chaos, a happy chaos, the kind of blinding nuttiness that can only come with a family this size. We wanted to take portraits of all of the family units plus the whole family and different groups and singles where there was time. It was a smashing success.
The Gullahorn's bought a giant piece of property "out in the country" 30 some years ago and it's fun to think this is just the scene they imagined when they made this wonderful purchase.
Thank you for looking.
Tomorrow, stay tuned for Samantha's bachelorette party.
As usual you can see more images on facebook.

4.7.10 Katrina + Andrew Married! by Melanie Grizzel

Katrina and Andrews wedding was held a few weeks back at The Gardens of Cranesbury View. Wow, stunning location. It's a blank slate with a Tuscan sensibility, immaculate, perfect. The gardens are fantastic and and clearly a labor of love. It's built on a slight hill so it seems to open up the sky. The Collins a husband and wife team who own this treasure are the perfect addition to your perfect day, accommodating and resourceful. You really can't go wrong. If you haven't seen it, you must go.
Katrina and Andrew. I just love you guys, look at those smiles. So perfectly matched. Enjoy your beautiful life together. I'm glad I got to be there at the beginning.

2.24.10 for fun by Melanie Grizzel

Yesterday in Austin, Tx... it snowed. I know, you can't believe it right, well I have proof.
It was the first time in 14+ months that Bishop boy has seen snow so I snatched him away from his morning breakfast so we could get a shot of him with the snow. There wasn't much, but he could sit in it and had to wear a hat and his favorite Lakers jacket.
Thanks for looking.

2.22.10 Taylor Senior by Melanie Grizzel

We shot a senior portrait for a Gracie about a month ago and now her good friend from school ms. Taylor has come for her Senior Portraits. I LOVE shooting Senior portraits. Taylor graduates in June this year and besides being super cute she's also brilliant and dedicated. She was just checking out the University of her choice, in BOSTON!!! I am a big advocate of students leaving home and trying out the other end of the country to go to school. It's the best and most freeing time of your whole life. Try everything out, now is the time. Congratulations to Taylor, sounds like she's made her choice, she'll be a Husky next year. We wish you all the best.
As always you can find more images on Facebook.

1.22.10 It's been a while. by Melanie Grizzel

I know it's been quite a while since my last post infact I have a couple of good things to post but I've been so busy wrapping up last year still I just haven't had the time. We are getting ready to overhaul the entire office, maybe this weekend.
Since the year began though, my dear baby Bishop turned 1 year old. Can you believe it?
I can't! So in honor of him growing,  I thought I put up a few pictures of his growth and progress. This year has seen a weight gain of 18lbs, we're so proud. Plus the addition of, count them, 5 teeth. He is sitting up, crawling, smiling, talking (no actual words) and the most currently and my personal favorite, laughing not only with you but when he thinks something is funny. I LOVE it.
Here are some of his sweet picts from the year.
Thanks for indulging me. I'll be back to proper posts next week.
Take good care.

12-28-09 Cutie Kyle in Belmont Shore by Melanie Grizzel

It appears as though it's been quite a while since my last post, it has! I took a nice long vacation for Christmas to California with my dear family. It was a relaxing and quiet 10 days. We watched the baby do everything from almost walk to eating mud. I'll post pictures of that soon. In the mean time, I shot a headshot for Kyle Roberts while we were there.
His agent is sending him for comedy, he wants to do drama and his hair alone is a character actor.
Please enjoy

9.1.09 Miata World by Melanie Grizzel

So we shot this fun little editorial at the beginning of the summer, May I think. As you know, you can't post any editorial content until the embargo is up, so it finally ran, in the September issue of Zoom Zoom Magazine. I wanted to show these off, they were super fun. So it's a convention for Mazda Miata owners and drivers. 300+ Miatas converged in Grapevine, Tx for the 2nd annual event. Now you may not know this about me, but I am not much of a car person. I mean I can look at those little Miatas and appreciate them for beginning cute and shiny but I just don't give a flip about what's under your hood. But being on the track at Texas Motor Speedway was exciting, I have to admit. It felt like a place where few had stepped before us, it was special. While my opinions of cars have not wholly changed, I have a new appreciation.
Thanks for looking.

7-8-09 Gecko by Melanie Grizzel

So the other night, Steve and I were headed to bed when Steve spotted a Gecko clinging to the window. I thought it was so great, I had to take a few pictures. Well then we blinded the poor thing with a maglight to get the right effect. Meanwhile 3am rolls around and the Gecko is so tired of us it leapt into the night sky. yuck... it almost touched me ;)
This experiment is a study of the effects of light. One subject, different lighting, completely different effects.
enjoy.
